Do What Works For You

Have you ever tried to do something and couldn’t do it to a T and quit because you weren’t “perfect” with everything you were supposed to do?

I have spent over twenty-five years strength training, competing in MMA, and training individuals for the last 15 years.

Having this experience behind me, I can say fitness is relative to the individual.

For example, I was having a diet conversation with a new client yesterday and going over his habits.

He asked me if he would see the desired results with his current diet.

I informed him that his protein intake was a little low, but he would still see results from what he did without eating more protein.

I told him in an ideal world, yes, he should be getting more protein.

Getting enough protein is a main concern or issue for those on a plant based or vegan diet.

The problem with the ideal scenario for building muscle for this particular client is he is a working professional and most likely doesn’t have the time or inclination to track and eat more protein with his current diet.

Many variables come to play with your level of fitness.

How much sleep you get, your stress levels, and of course, your diet is only three examples.

When was the last time you were on point with all three examples?

If you are like most people, you are not on point with every variable, which is ok.

You’ll have days where you don’t sleep, eat lousy food, and do things that aren’t conducive to your fitness.

Your fitness is a paradigm and is different for everyone.

If you aren’t eating as much protein as you should, it is ok if it is not ideal.

The point is you still try to do your best whatever version of YOUR best is.

Don’t compare yourself to others, and don’t expect yourself to be perfect with everything you should be doing.

Fitness is a practice such as law, martial arts, or medicine.

There is no attainment of perfection, but you are constantly striving to achieve perfection.

That is why you TRY to be a better version of yourself.

Nutrition is usually the main topic of conversation and how it relates to your health.

Especially this time of year when everyone gets sick with the flu or some respiratory illness.

One of the most common issues I encounter is people running on both ends and needing to pay attention to themselves.

I always preach you have to take care of yourself to be the most productive and bear the load of caring for others.

Taking care of yourself isn’t about spending time in a gym and eating broccoli.

Everyone’s fitness paradigm is different, but you should have a basic standard that includes daily healthy meals and adequate hydration, proper sleep habits, and moving your body a minimum of three times per week.

I have had countless encounters where someone tells me about their diet issues and how they feel.

I always use the analogy of a car engine and putting low-octane or bad gas in the tank.

Your engine will sputter, not idle well, and generally lose horsepower and functionality.

Your body isn’t any different.

If you feed yourself the wrong fuel and ignore yourself, you will feel bad or subpar in what you’re capable of.

Some of the most basic foundations for health often get ignored. Here are three things you can implement to improve your health if you aren’t doing them now.

  1. Stay Hydrated properly. People don’t drink enough water, and I can’t preach this enough. Take electrolytes and drink water. You should urinate clearly at least once a day.
  2. Eat cruciferous vegetables. That old saying eat your vegetables can’t ring any more valid here. People don’t eat enough fiber in their diets, and you would be amazed and what the right amount of fiber can do for your gut. Remember, if your gut is not healthy, you are not healthy.
  3. You need to move your body a minimum of thrice a week. Choose an activity or activities such as biking, walking, jogging, the gym, or whatever makes you stay consistent in moving your body.

Try it out for a month, track your progress and see how you feel.
